Naturally, being a water safety charity, IWSG also offer safety cover for events on or around water.
This could be a safety boat for your triathlon, land based water rescue personnel for your raft race, high speed safety and patrols or anything in between.
Our team comprises of various qualifications which enable us to operate in different environments and to provide safety to users of waterways. The list below shows the main qualifications we hold.
- Rescue 3 – Basic Water Rescue (BWR)
- Rescue 3 SwiftWater & Flood Rescue (SRT)
- DeFRA Module 4 Rescue Boat Responder (flood & flow)
- RYA Powerboat Level 2
- RYA VHF Marine Communications
- First Person on Scene Intermediate (FPOS-i) medical
- First Aid at Work
- Mental Health Advisor
- Manual Handling
- PASMA Mobile Platform Access
- CSCS Operator
- Roped access (though we do not offer rope rescue)
These skills and qualifications enable our team to operate in many different environments, ensuring the safety of themselves and the public. We are experienced in writing and reviewing risk assessments, managing risks in dangerous areas and providing a safe way of working including planning on the fly.
The team operate an IP based communications system, similar to Airwave and the new Emergency Services Network, which allows the team to have constant contact with each other and control. Along with this system, control has the ability to dispatch a CAD (computer aided dispatch) or ‘job’ to the team. This CAD can contain information such as a location, with GPS coordinates, description of the incident and other useful information. It allows control to track the location of the team members and provide updates. This could be useful for events on a larger scale or covering a wider area, where the team could be dispatched to an incident and given the information they need to respond quickly and accurately.
Our safety boats carry a comprehensive set of equipment. This meets the RYA standards and includes extra items akin to water rescue, such as reach and wading poles, spare PFD’s (personal floatation devices or life jackets) and basic life support medical equipment. Due to the nature of risk on or around water, the boats do not carry an AED and as such have a solid floor to allow the team to effectively administer CPR in the event of a cardiac arrest.
Insurance is often overlooked, IWSG is insured by Zurich and our policy covers us for safety & education work, patrols, search & rescue as well as providing medical assistance. We are insured up to a maximum of £10m public liability and this also covers our volunteering crews. Our boats carry separate insurance as well, but this is mainly to cover the equipment.
If you would like to talk to us and book us to cover your event, please use the Contact Us page and one of the team will be in touch to discuss your requirements and provide a quote.
We quote to cover our operating expenses, cost of wear & tear on equipment and training. None of our team recieve any payment or salary for any work on behalf of IWSG but may be reimbursed for expenses. Any payment made to IWSG goes back into enabling us to provide the services we do and helps us to fund our safety patrols and education.
